redhouse standings stones.

redhouse standings stones. found out these should probably be referred to as the redhouse standing stones. from the local farmhouse and not to the kerris stones as there the is another triangular stone by the last name. these two very nice stones are not in the official monument record although they have been recorded by both mitchell and barnet in the 60’s. many of the close by have given up many finds spanning both the mesolithic and the neolithic so they are in good company. a feature of the fields in which they stand is the large number of stones set in the boundary ‘hedges’. one such can be seen just to the right of the stone. and at the far left of the photo along the boundary edge

practical wisdom. boxing clever

practical wisdom suggests that in order to make stuff you first have apply an certain kind of intelligence to the practice of that making. in many cases this implies making other stuff first. this is our version of a BOXjoint jig. not surprisingly for making box joints. our intention is to make a simple seat.

this is the philosophy born out of the art of making things.
phronesis is the ancient greek word to describe this type of wisdom or intelligence. it is wisdom that is born out of thoughtful practical action. aristotle distinguishes it from episteme and techne as it combines wisdom and intelligent virtues with this practical character. ben at sheffield quarry.
sheffield is thought to have been established to house the workers of the sheffield quarry and later the surrounding farms. the settlement was built along the road into newlyn where the quarry’s stone had to be crated for shipment. the area is thought to have been inhabited as far back as the mesolithic (8000 BC to 4001 BC) and the neolithic (4000 BC to 2501 BC). many artefacts from this period were recovered from an arable field at sheffield farm in 2003.

the principal stone of the district is the well-known land’s end granite. sheffield quarry, is post-medieval and has been continuously worked from 1540 AD to the late 1920s

the ordinary and extra-ordinary. columbia road lock-up rosewall hill granite tor.

on a hill across the valley from here -on trink there’s a large tor known locally as the grandmother’s stone.
is this extra-ordinary configuration here its counterpart? – the grandfather’s stone? these stones i’m sure entered the world of our ancestors in a similar way – by naming it it enters the imagination and the story begins.
the ordinary also needs a name if it is to be recovered and reclaimed. a bolted door; little used;? locking down a hidden world. shut tight; lock-up; keep out; lockdown; sealed up; sealed tight – this door also becomes an opening onto the imaginary.

a hole in four (or maybe five) holed stone row botallack common.
a line of holed stones on moorland at botallack common lie at approximately 168m above od. four holed stones were noted and sketched in 1842 by the reverend buller. a further fifth stone was recognised by blight in 1908 although this remains in question. four large roughly cut regular granite slabs, partly recumbent, are set in an alignment orientated wsw-ene. they have bevelled perforations, with an average 7.5cm to 9cm in diameter. only half of one stone still survives with the fracture across the perforation. the fifth outlying stone which unlike the others is not in alignment, not bevelled but with a straight sided hole. the function of the monument is unknown; possibly part of a short stone row and should perhaps be considered as part of other ceremonial activities, close to the tregaseal circle and barrows (the term ‘ordnance datum’ OD, refers to the height of mean sea-level, taken from a reference point at newlyn in cornwall. this is basis of the national height system for the whole of britain

recent discoveries at bryn celli ddu.

recent discoveries at bryn celli ddu.
a geophysical survey was conducted, recently, around the bryn celli ddu chambered tomb exposing evidence of a cairn cemetery. the 5,000-year-old tomb, a complex dating from the neolithic through to early bronze age, was also found to include the at least four burial cairns and a cluster of prehistoric pits with pottery deposits, worked flint, and tools. its relationship to the summer equinox was tested confirming that the main passage focuses the light along its length and illuminating the entire polygonal stone chamber.

in addition 8 new cupmarked rock art on associated outcrops have been identified, using 3d scanning techniques. a dumbbell motif surrounded by singular cup-marks, cup-marks in close formation, possibly in the form of a rosette and one with a large cup-mark

the mound in the dark grove. anglesey wales

the mound in the dark grove. anglesey wales
bryn celli ddu may be translated as ‘the mound in the dark grove’, and some have speculated that during its time of construction, it was located in a large clearing then surrounded entirely forest. archaeologists have suggested that the original stone circles were set up during the neolithic period, around 3000 bc.

around a thousand years after it was built, it became an ‘entrance grave’ or passage tomb, a type of burial monument found around the irish seaboard.

bryn celli ddu was accurately aligned to coincide with the rising sun on the summer solstices with the rays of light penetrating down the passage way into the burial chamber. this connects if firmly in the tradition of the irish passage graves notably new grange with its ‘letterbox’ opening projecting light onto the rear wall of its chamber.
