stone axe menhir

BOSCAWEN-UN_CENTRESTONE-BWexS

it is suggested that the axe shaped centre longstone at boscawen-un stone circle probably predates the other stones that make up this elliptical stone circle. like an axe head struck into the ground, it is thought that it has always lent at this angle. to further reinforce this association its leaning face has two axe head picked out in relief at the wider end and echoing the its shape with the ‘cutting’ end facing in the same direction.

it appears to have been deliberately shaped with its tapering end uppermost. its flat side holding the relief axes and its opposite side made up of two facets forming a ridge giving it a strong directional axis.
