the merrivale stonerows. part one

the three double stone rows form just one part of an extensive ceremonial megalithic complex that includes a stone circle, standing stones, cairns and cists and a closely associated settlement of prehistoric roundhouses. it is situated on a gently sloping plateaux and in sight of notable tor outcrops. alignments across the two main rows with the winter and summer solstices have also been noted. sun shaddows at sunrise and sunset are said to touch stone in the adjacent row and can seemingly predict these calendarial events. both the main rows are terminated with larger more significant stone orthostats. most of the stones are little more than a few centimetres high, however there are a number of single taller stones set along their length appearing to align the two rows or announce the presence of other monuments…
