the merrivale stonerows. part two
the three double stone rows form just one part of an extensive ceremonial megalithic complex that includes a stone circle, standing stones, cairns and cists and a closely associated settlement of prehistoric roundhouses. it is situated on a gently sloping plateaux and in sight of notable tor outcrops. alignments across the two main rows with the winter and summer solstices have also been noted. both the main rows are terminated with larger more significant stones with most of the stones little more than a few centimetres high. there are however a number of single taller stones set along their length appearing to align the two rows or announce the presence of other adjacent monument. |
