higher drift long stones. triganeeris sisters.

higher drift long stones. triganeeris sisters. first recorded by w borlase in 1754 and some 100 years was excavated by his direct descendant william copeland borlase, finding a pit between the two stones. no burial artefact found. they align NNW / SSE and are 2.6m and 2.3m high and 4.9m apart. they are intervisible with the tresvennack pillar also with a similar burial pit in with a cremation urn was found. although the alignment is not directly towards the pillar if as you can see from this photo the two stones form a clear sight line through which the tresvennack pillar can be located. this is a more likely way in which these monuments are tied together and would have been used as part of way making in prehistory

boleigh standing stone.

boleigh standing stone. one of two ‘pipers’ that are part of the merry maiden stone circle ceremonial complex and are one of a set of outliers aligned to the circle. at 4.1 metres high it leans heavily to the northwest and like many similar stones has up to a third of it total length below ground making it around 6m in overall length. at around two tonnes in weight this fashioned menhir would have required a large well organised community to have erected it. sited close to two large granite grounders which seem to be significant in it positioning it forms with its taller companion part of a ceremonial route that might have connected the stone circle to the sea via lamorna valley and its water courses

the pipers of boleigh standing stones.

the pipers of boleigh standing stones. a pair of outliers to the merry maidens stone circle on a north east south west orientation and pointing directly towards the stone circle. these impressive stones are among the tallest in west penwith being 4.1 and 4.7m in height, the shorter of the two being furthest from the circle and leaning heavily to the northwest. their name derives from a myth that describes them as frozen pipers so formed for their part in revelries at the merry maidens on the sabbeth. another that they mark the spot where aethelstan and howeth fought in the 10th century and represent the two leaders. howeth was the leader of the cornish celts

mên scryfa.

mên scryfa or ‘Inscribed stone’ is situated on level ground near to mên-an-tol stone circle SW426349. it could mark the burial site of a prominent romano-celtic chieftain. the inscription reads ‘rialobran cunovali fili’ – or ‘here lies Rialvran (royal raven) son of cunoval’….although the words at the base of the stone now lie below ground level. it appears to be in an alignment to a groove in carn galver an important neolithic site a kilometre further north. it is thought that the inscription may have been made on a far older neolithic menhir an_tol
