concrete object. henry|seaton. the work, which we have described as >negative objects< comes about through a casting process using concrete form-work.
using found, disused elements of styrene packaging, we in part, reverse ‘engineer’ a series of pre-existing commodity objects.
these negative_objects are formed by re-assembling the disparate parts that make up this ’after-image’ of the original object and adding a material which has a history that certainly goes back to the romans and in itself becomes solid over an extended period of time (through a process of hydration).
in that sense each object has a history built in.
these objects are in fact in a continuous process of becoming solid, and therefore more definitive, more real. hopefully they become less abstract – and more connected – the more they sit in the world, with their physical appearance reflecting these small molecular changes – they in fact, become ‘more concrete’.
the tangible, palpable nature of this physical alteration over time brings it into a direct collision with its inherent abstracted form.
