photography, montage and dialectics

the relationship that exists between dialectics and photography is founded on the appearance of montage as a technique. these are intrinsically bound together but not reducible one to another.
it is the dialectics not of hegelian synthesis but one that is held fast in suspension, prompting simultaneous parallel dialectical readings – not to unify opposites into an array of synthesis but into a constellation of tensions – this constellations of tensions is what constitutes a dialectical image. the task of photography is to snap enough images for this constellation ’to form through sudden flashes of recognition in which the collective consciousness ‘seizes upon them in politics and history emerges’
