trefignath burial chamber. anglesey.

neolithic chambered tomb constructed in three separate phases, between around 3750 to 2250 BCE. it is built on a base of natural stone that was previously inhabited and is compiled of three separate burial chambers. the first tomb, situated to the west was a simple box chamber covered with a round cairn. The second, central part of the tomb has complex collapsed and the enormous capstone broken. the final phase of construction was situated at the northeast end of the mound and has undergone some restoration but survives largely in its original form. the combined structure was then covered in a long mound of stones. many of the orthostats making up the tomb have quartz seems running through them and were undoubtably chosen for this reason. quartz was especially favoured for use in burial architecture.
