fyfield downs, east-north-east of avebury stone circles. a recumbent standing stone exhibiting the dishes and grooves formed in shaping and polishing stone axes during the neolithic. these standing stones were imbued with special significance as a result their role in the creation of ceremonial axe heads, and would be thought, in turn, to impart special powers to the axes. . . .
