merrivale stone row. dartmoor.

one of a pair of stone rows, this tight avenue of stones is oriented just 2 degrees north of west and sets itself against the cardinal east west alignment of its northern partner. the triangular ‘blocking stone’ that heads the southern row casts a strong shadow from the late summer sun that points due north at noon. it could have informed the initiated, on daily basis, of the changing seasons as the shadows registers against the stones sited opposite. it has been observed that these stones at the solstices the rising sun cast low lying shadows across to its northern partner and align with major stones along its length and on again, to significant points on the horizon.
