a geophysical survey was conducted, recently, around the bryn celli ddu chambered tomb exposing evidence of a cairn cemetery. the 5,000-year-old tomb, a complex dating from the neolithic through to early bronze age, was also found to include the at least four burial cairns and a cluster of prehistoric pits with pottery deposits, worked flint, and tools. its relationship to the summer equinox was tested confirming that the main passage focuses the light along its length and illuminating the entire polygonal stone chamber.
in addition 8 new cupmarked rock art on associated outcrops have been identified, using 3d scanning techniques. a dumbbell motif surrounded by singular cup-marks, cup-marks in close formation, possibly in the form of a rosette and one with a large cup-mark

bryn celli ddu may be translated as ‘the mound in the dark grove’, and some have speculated that during its time of construction, it was located in a large clearing then surrounded entirely forest. archaeologists have suggested that the original stone circles were set up during the neolithic period, around 3000 bc.
around a thousand years after it was built, it became an ‘entrance grave’ or passage tomb, a type of burial monument found around the irish seaboard.
bryn celli ddu was accurately aligned to coincide with the rising sun on the summer solstices with the rays of light penetrating down the passage way into the burial chamber. this connects if firmly in the tradition of the irish passage graves notably new grange with its ‘letterbox’ opening projecting light onto the rear wall of its chamber.

merrivale stone row. dartmoor. this tight avenue of stone oriented just 2degrees north of west and set against the east west alignment of its northern partner. the triangular ‘blocking stone’ casts a strong shadow from the late summer sun and points due north at noon.. it has been observed, as we head towards the winter solstice that these low lying shadows at sunrise cross the northern row at cardinal points and are picked up in the position of the stones along its length.
