the whispering knights.

the whispering knights. they form part of the rollright stones complex that spans across the neolithic and bronze age. constructed from local oolitic limestone, the three monuments now known respectively as the king’s men, the king stone and the whispering knights, are distinct in their design and purpose, and bears witness to a continuous tradition of ritual behaviour on this sacred ground, from the 4th to the 2nd millennium bce.

the first to be constructed was the whispering knights, a dolmen that likely dates to the early neolithic period probably to have been used as a place of burial. The stone circle known as the king’s men, was constructed in the late neolithic or early bronze age and probably related other circles located in cumbria and implying a trade-based or ritual connection. the third monument, the king stone, is a single monolith, and although it is not known when it was constructed, the dominant theory is that it was a bronze age grave marker. #dolmen #standing_stone #stone_circle #ritual #sacred #neolithic #bronze_age from instagram: http://ift.tt/1QJKggz
