the merry maidens stone circle.

the merry maidens stone circle or dawns-maen sits just below the 100m contour, at 98mod, the lowest in altitude and nearest to the coast of the four remaining circles in west penwith. all seem to be culturally related, with the merry maiden, boscawen-un and tregaseal all having similar numbers of stones (19-20) with a wider gap forming the entrance, in this case on the eastern side. it has a number of outliers in its immediate vicinity with two of the largest standing stones in cornwall, the pipers, to its northeast, and goonrith or gunrith to its west. holed standing stones are also close by. a date around 2500bc is suggested. (burl)

a second circle situated to the south west of present circle, was recorded in the early eighteenth century by borlase, who noted the presence of four upright and three recumbent stones forming a circle of about 30 paces in diameter. it was seen again by haniwell in 1861, but most of the stones were by then ‘thrown down and concealed by furze’ (barnatt 1982

boleigh standing stone.

boleigh standing stone. one of two ‘pipers’ that are part of the merry maiden stone circle ceremonial complex and are one of a set of outliers aligned to the circle. at 4.1 metres high it leans heavily to the northwest and like many similar stones has up to a third of it total length below ground making it around 6m in overall length. at around two tonnes in weight this fashioned menhir would have required a large well organised community to have erected it. sited close to two large granite grounders which seem to be significant in it positioning it forms with its taller companion part of a ceremonial route that might have connected the stone circle to the sea via lamorna valley and its water courses

merrivale stone row.

merrivale stone row. dartmoor. part of a complex of two stone circles, a double row (of which this is the southerly) a single row, a large cist, stone cairns, hut circles and standing stones. this double stone row is 264m long but just .9m wide and aligned 2degrees further to the north than the east west alignment of the northern double row. it terminates at the western end with paired pillars and a ground slab. it’s eastern end like the northern row has a triangular stone set against the line of the row. along its length, not quite at its centre is a small cairn circle 3.6m in diameter with its severn stones enclosing a cist

mên scryfa.

mên scryfa or ‘Inscribed stone’ is situated on level ground near to mên-an-tol stone circle SW426349. it could mark the burial site of a prominent romano-celtic chieftain. the inscription reads ‘rialobran cunovali fili’ – or ‘here lies Rialvran (royal raven) son of cunoval’….although the words at the base of the stone now lie below ground level. it appears to be in an alignment to a groove in carn galver an important neolithic site a kilometre further north. it is thought that the inscription may have been made on a far older neolithic menhir an_tol

pentre ifan cromlech.

pentre ifan cromlech. this extraordinary floating stone monument has two explanation for its construction and use – one the more traditional is that it is a neolithic communal burial chamber with the 16 tonne capstone forming its lid and that it would have been the business end of a long barrow with a court at its front facing in this case south , these is evidence of this mound with some of its cur stone still present in a deteriorated form at the site. another more radical explanation is what we see now is closer to its original form and that indeed the stone was intended to be seen to float. that it was a expression of the builder’s prowess and skill. the capstone as is the case here has a flat under as a result of it being split from and even larger erratic and this was important – other similar monuments have their underside fearfully pecked away to achieve the same result. It was raised to this position gradually using stones props and levers and the three main supports then placed into position. other large were then added. these floating stones were. it is suggested a highly augmented version of the standing stone monuments and were announcing the presence of a tribal territory or a special or sacred place. what we do know is that it was in use over a extended period of time and may well have been used in different ways and meaning different things over the course of its existence. so both propositions might be true

cwrt-y-gollen standing stone.

cwrt-y-gollen standing stone otherwise known as the growing stone for it does appear to be thrusting out of the ground. this 4metre high red sandstone menhir sits close to an enormous oak with a prodigious girth. it certainly reinforces the reflection that this stone is alive and is indeed growing out from the earth. these standing stones were perhaps the antecedents of the upturned oak trees which feature in many of the timber monuments that were a part of a ceremonial life that preceded this period

carreg waun llech standing stone.

carreg waun llech standing stone. situated on the moors above llangynidr. a distinctive slab of limestone 2.6 m high, about 40cm thick, narrowing towards the top and with pronounce vertical stratification when viewed side on. both faces are pitted with what appears like cup marks but are probably natural features. it sits on a wet sodden limestone plateau and within its own pool of water which gathers around its base. It was undoubtably chosen for its striking features and erected at this spot for its association with this water born place

llangynidir standing stone. llwn-y-fedwen. brecknock.

llangynidir – alt. llwn-y-fedwen – standing stone. brecknock. a magnificent stone of erratic limestone stands 4.27 m in height, 1.42 m wide and a metre thick, on the north side of the river usk above langynidr’s mediaeval bridge. sited on a natural knoll some 60 m in length with many lose stones at its base. these can be traced for some way towards the river and might be the remains of a stone wall. it has deep horizontal grooves on one side and a covering of pronounced white lichen. the stone came to notoriety in the 1970’s when is was dowsed by bill lewis, a well known local dowser, and found to have emitted a magnetic field. this was confirmed later with the use of a magnometer although compelling this has yet to be repeated
