otherwise known as the growing stone, it does appear to be thrusting out of the ground. this 4metre high red sandstone menhir sits close to an enormous oak with a prodigious girth. it certainly reinforces the reflection that this stone is alive and is indeed growing out from the earth. these standing stones were perhaps the antecedents of the upturned oak trees which feature in many of the timber monuments that were a part of a ceremonial life that preceded this period. |
